Microbiology Training for the Food Industry:
producing high quality and safe foods

7 July 2010

The food and drink industry in Northern Ireland, with 50,000 people, is the single biggest private sector employer and the bedrock of the Northern Ireland economy. Technology and knowledge transfer from research organisations to the food industry is imperative to its continued success. The development of new skills and technologies by NI’s food industry professionals will help keep their companies at the forefront of innovation.

To this end, research scientists from the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) have teamed up with LP Associates Ltd to offer specialised training for the food industry. The first 2-day course on “Microbiology for the Food Industry: producing high quality and safe foods” will be held on 16-17th November 2010 at AFBI Headquarters in Belfast.

The course is designed for people who have some prior knowledge of microbiology and wish to gain a deeper insight into specific problems related to the microbiological safety and spoilage of foods. The material will be delivered through lectures, case studies, practical demonstrations and some hands-on laboratory work.

Margaret Patterson, (food microbiologist from AFBI) says “We plan to tailor the examples we use to meet the specific interests of the delegates, to help ensure that the information is relevant to their needs”.

This type of training fits in with the recent report “Focus on Food” published jointly by Invest NI and DARD which emphasised the need for continued training and upskilling of the workforce in the agri-food sector, at all levels from factory floor to the Boardroom.

Michael Bell from the Northern Ireland Food and Drink Association supports this view , saying “Improving our competitive position means constant refreshing. We are world class and initiatives such as this help us to develop and maintain that position.”

“Normally people have to travel to GB for this level of training, and this can add extra expense in terms of travel costs and time away from the workplace” says Lynn Patterson of LP Associates Ltd.  “I am delighted to work with AFBI in this venture and hope this will be the first of many collaborative training courses we can run together”.
